Can’t rearrange apps within iTunes
I’ve been through a lot of nerves yesterday trying to arrange my iPhone apps within iTunes. I even had the latest version, iTunes 9.1.
I’ve tried everything: unplugging and replugging my iPhone, turning it OFF and ON, checking my iPhone for restrictions (none) and finally syncing it. The damn iTunes didn’t let me rearrange the apps. The screen with iPhone’s apps pages was greyed out with no chance of selecting the apps or pages.
After all, even worst, I couldn’t transfer any of my purchased apps from iPhone to computer. Tried to deauthorize / re-authorize my computer but it didn’t work out as well.
After 30-40 minutes of doing all of these and tired of looking on internet for answers I decided to restore the Norton Ghost back-up and then I was able of transferring the apps to my PC and then rearranging the apps on iPhone from within iTunes 9.0.
You might ask yourself, do I need to reinstall the computer operation system to get back to normality? If you don’t have a back-up of your system, as I had, you can try and I have the feeling that will work also, to uninstall and reinstall iTunes but try an older version. As I said I am using now iTunes 9.0 and seams just fine. Go for it.
Leave a reply here if works so others (including me) will know another solution to solve the problem besides reinstalling the OS or using the back-ups.
As a conclusion, I think this is an iTunes software bug. Another guessing is that iTunes is getting somehow corrupt after a while and is giving this error which is going everyone crazy.

I am having the exact same problem. My apps to the left in itunes are completely gone, and I can’t rearrange anything withing itunes. I hope this gets fixed or someone can help!
well first of all its greyed out because you didn’t tick the ‘sync’ option. Also why the “F” would you feel that your ipod is important enough to reinstall a OS? although you do have a image i guess so thats fine.
p.s i have the same problem and i went back from 9.2 to 9.0 still i can’t arrange the way i want it to
astro, you might need to backup your purchased apps, what to do if the iTunes is not working properly?
Im having the same problem. Its driving me nuts!
This is only happening wih my apps tho. I think it happened after an update. Some of my recently downloaded apps were not able to be installed either because of “unknown error”.
I had itunes 9, decided to put itunes 9.2 on because i figure all things work better with an upgrade? but this is still happening. After restoring my itouch and syncing again, Still, my apps are greyed out and wont let me do anything.
So, how do we fix it?
Actually, i just checked the settings on my itouch- i had restrictions turned on. Try turning off restrictions and it should let you access your apps on itunes
Prascilla’s idea worked!
Wow, never thought I’d stumble upon this here.
i’m running iTunes 10.1 and I can’t rearrange my apps on my iTouch through iTunes. I was able to once, nut not now. I am manually syncing my music if that matters. I have sync apps checked.
I’m stumped. I’ve rebooted the mac and rebooted iPod all with no luck. Restrictions are turned off.
HELP!
New installation of Windows 7 and had the same problem as you described here. Restrictions didn’t work for me, but instead had to do a sync including “Transfer purchases from iPod”. This did the job for me.
You gave tremendous positive points there. Used to do searching on the topic and found most peoples will agree with your site.
Thank you Priscilla!!! I’ve been soooo frustrated cause I couldn’t get my apps to work!!! =)
I had this problem too, driving me nuts, until 2 minutes ago when I fixed it. I was following the advice from another forum that suggested “reinstalling” itunes (a solution found on apples website). It involves going to look for the itunes folder on your harddrive. I have a Mac. When I searched for the folder, two itunes folders came up. One had lots of stuff in it, the other had an .rtf document, whatever that is. I deleted this folder with the document in it (I delete things easily, sometimes causes problems). I decided to see what would happen in itunes before continuing to “reinstall” it (I hadn’t deleted itunes yet) Voila. Getting rid of that folder fixed the problem. Don’t ask me why.
Changing my restriction to enable worked for my iphone too. Thanks for the suggestion
thanks to priscilla, straight forward simple solution solved it for me :)
Nice submit! GA is also my biggest earning. Nonetheless, it’s not a much.
I use iTunes 10.3 & am having the similar problem. I cant rearrange the apps as the screen with iPhone’s apps pages is greyed out. Restrictions are set to “off” on my iPod.
My problem is that if I tick the ‘sync’ option all my existing apps will be erased from my iPod touch. These are 3rd party apps & I don’t have a back up of these on my PC.
Is there a way to transfer these apps from my iPod to my PC or do I have to re-download all of them again from another website if I click on ‘sync’ ?
Please advise what should I do. I don’t want to go through the hassle to search for apps & download them again as there are too many of them.
Thanks priscilla… turning restrictions off worked!
Being a fellow online blogger I am all too aware that it can be very hard to come up with entertaining article ideas all the time! As such I wanted to say: kudos! Regards, Zana Riglos
I discovered your blog from ask.com and it’s remarkable. Thnx for stating such an incredible article!!
Well, when I found your post, I thought my problem would be solved– to my disappointment, it was not.
I then continued to search the web for a solution— Eureka! I found it. What made it work for me was Clicking on the “Sync Apps” box. Here’s the part I didn’t know about– this scary message saying “everything will be synced” pops up and you think if you click it, apps are going to stary flying back & forth between your iPhone and PC. Not the case! TaaDaa~ It then enables the screen and you can manage the apps as you like and THEN, click the ‘sync’ button.
I can’t say that this is the case for everyone (the restrictions do have to be off first), but it was a missing piece for me.
Thanks for “Sync Apps” suggestion. Worked perfectly as it removed greying out of apps in iTunes.
Thing I am having trouble with is deleting apps. I delete them from iPhone. Uncheck them from list in ITunes, and surprise, surprise when I sync it puts them all back again.
Any ideas?
Can anyone tell me why when my iPhone 4 is connected to iTunes, and I transfer an app from my library to the iPhone (and can see it is on the iPhone by clicking the app tab in iTunes and viewing the iPhone pages that display the apps on the phone), but when I exit from iTunes, I cannot see the app on the iPhone after all? I have tried using “search” on the iPhone, to no avail. A few weeks ago my PC crashed and I lost my original iTunes library. I have recreated it from a separate back up of music, and re-downloaded the apps through iTunes.. iTunes tells me the app is installed, but why can`t I see it on my iPhone?
