I have been looking for a while for a way to get my old blog articles promoted on twitter automatically using a wordpress plugin. The first days of the new year, 2010, came with an answer: Tweet Old Post. This wordpress plugin is automatically posting your blog articles on twitter, choosing random from within your blog posts, an amazing way to publicize your work onto the most visited social networking website on the globe, Twitter.

I remember, last year I have been trying using Twit Robot, an online service, doing actually the same thing like Tweet Old Post plugin, tweeting automatically old blog posts but for whatsoever reason that services is no longer available or maybe is just temporarily out of service (Server under Upgradation is the message on their website).

I’m not gonna describe Tweet Old Post plugin, as you can get all the details on the wordpress download page of the plugin. I just hope is doing a good job.

I don’t have too many followers on twitter right now (I’ve just created a brand new Twitter account after a few months I was missing from Twitter – after both my Twitter accounts were suspended) but if you get a great number of Twitter followers, this wp plugin will really increase your blog visitors number by tweeting of older blog posts.

Here the wordpress page where you can find this plugin.

“The End of the Internet
Congratulations! This is the last page.
Thank you for visiting the End of the Internet. There are no more links.
You must now turn off your computer and go do something productive.
Go read a book, for pete’s sake. ”

Dear friends, this is the END!
I’ve just reach the last page of the Internet. The end of the end, the Internet is down here on his knees. I see it, I feel it! Now is time for books, movies (not XXX, you dirty bastard!) good music and family candies. Actually I even start with a big cup of ice cream. Don’t judge me, nobody got there before, on the last page of the Internet, like I did.
Peace brother!

To do this go to your ftp account, open .htaccess (use notepad) and add a similar line. I have been used an example for uploading an .ipa file but you can change to whatsoever type of file you want. Enjoy!

AddType application/octet-stream .ipa

e.g.:
RewriteBase /

I know that there is an another method which involves to modify the SQL but we all knows that this a complicated method and we have to have good skills in working with code.

The easy method which everyone should be able to do it in no more than 5 seconds is to delete a file from your blog ftp directory. You will find it regularly in public_html. The name of this file is wp-trackback.php.

1. open your ftp and go to public_html
2. locate wp-trackback.php and delete it.

This should disable from now all pingbacks / trackbacks on your wordpress blog posts.

First of all you have to have access to your web domain cPanel. The best part is that almost every web hosting is providing this user interface, named cPanel.

Here all that seven steps for installing WordPress:

1. Search on Google for: WordPress download. Download the latest version. If it’s an archive, extract the files into a new folder.

2. Go to your website FTP and upload all the files and folders belongs to the WordPress into the Public folder. Or, you can use the File Manager from cPanel to upload / extract files directly on server.

3. Go to cPanel. It should be something like this: http://www.yourdomain.com/cpanel. Enter the user name and password. Open MySQL (mine icon is named MySQL Account Maintenance) and Create a new database and create a new user name and assign it a password. Set the Privileges: ALL – this is very important!

4. Open your blog by typing your blog address into the browser.

5. Create a config file where you’ll have to add all the info asked: database name, user name and password (created in step 3).

6. You will receive a WordPress user name and password. Write them down!

7. Welcome to WordPress! Your blog should be now up and running.

Other possible settings: block search engines from indexing your blog (in case you’re planning to add some content first on it), change the default password created by WordPress engine with your preferred one.

ISSUE:
These days I have been experimenting a big problem – on another blog of mine when I clicked on the pictures from the the first rows of the photo gallery, (I use Thickbox to display images) the categories links appears above the Thickbox image. This problem comes up in Internet Explorer and Firefox.

SOLUTION:
The problem is z-index value and you have to change the theme’s #links_menu_over z-index to a lower value than that of thickbox’s z-index .
To fix the problem follow next steps:

1. Open the .css file, from your wordpress theme (or whenever website you have), regularly named style.css. You can use notepad if you don’t have other html editor.

2. Locate your Banner / Links / Menu div. In my case I modified #categories. Change the z value like this: z-index: 5;

Mine:
#categories {
margin-top: 11px;
margin-bottom: 45px;
z-index: 5;
position: relative;
}

If you don’t know where to look do a search for “z-index”. Yours should be that one linked to Banner / Links / Menu and could be in this form: #banner, #links, #menu it depends of what it’s appear above your Thickbox image.

3. Open Thickbox.css, locate #TB_overlay and modify the value of z-index to be bigger than the above value. In my case I put z-index:100;

Mine:
#TB_overlay {
position: fixed;
z-index:100;
top: 0px;
left: 0px;
height:100%;
width:100%;
}

4. Copy both .css files over the originals using the ftp.

Right now your photo gallery website should work like a charm :)

This days, I got stacked into a problem – I wanted to create a Contact page but I couldn’t find where is the drop down menu in order to change the template for that new page. It was about another website of me.

I was pretty sure that there should be a number of different templates created by me a couple of months ago, not only the default template.

Took me a while to figure it out how to get back that drop down menu.
Here is the solution:

1. Upload your Template Page into your own Theme
2. Activate the default theme, then change it back to your theme (like reloading your theme)
2. Go to your new page, the template drop down box should be at its place. You can choose now any template for your new page. Thank God! :)

I am not 100% sure, but I think that problem is only in WordPress 2.7 and up.

I prefer WinSCP as ftp uploader/downloader program and this is because you’re able to see even the hidden files or directories on the web server.

Problem: sometime if you want to upload a photo into your blog post you might get an error like “HTTP error”, “An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later” or like in my today issue you couldn’t use any file uploader, flash nor browser uploader. I got stucked because my image goes in gallery every time I tried to uploaded it into the blog post.

Solution:
# open your ftp software and get into public_html folder on your website server (you need to know user/password)

The worpress folder public_html

# copy .htaccess file onto your computer
# open .htaccess with notepad
# if is nothing in, no line, just copy the next script there and save the document

<ifmodule mod_security.c>
<files async-upload.php>
SecFilterEngine Off
SecFilterScanPOST Off
</files>
</ifmodule>

# if is something written in .htaccess file, add my code code after the last line of previous one. Save and exit.
# upload and overwrite the new .htaccess file into the public_html folder onto your website server.

You should be able to upload your image now. Have fun and keep posting good photos ;)

Most WordPress blog themes we’ve met, probably more than 90% of them, display the full content of articles on the first page of the website. We do not want that. We want users to click on the article title to read more. Thus increase the number of clicks and make the site more attractive and in addition the index page will be brief.

To have a clearer idea what I’m talking about, take a look here (another blog of mine) or simply take a look on this blog home page and you’ll see articles that are not fully displayed but only with [...]. This mean you need to click the title to get into the complete article page.

You have the option to write everytime <!–more–>, or to give a click on “more” button from over the writing console, anywhere you need to split the post, but is tiring every time to do this. Let’s find out how to modify the blog template to have by default, post, all the time in this way. The method is pretty simple and you don’t need to be a guru in php (I’m not!).

To do this you need to open the index.php and search & replace the template tag the_content() with the_excerpt().
First of all you have to do a backup of index.php. Regularly I copy that file from the server on my pc, in two different folders, and I modify only one file of that two files. If it’s goes wrong I copy back the original file to the server.

The old code of my wordpress theme was:

<? if (is_home() && (!$paged || $paged == 1) || is_search() || is_single() || is_page()): ?>
<?php the_content(‘Read the rest of this entry »’); ?>
<? else: ?><?php the_excerpt() ?><? endif; ?>

which I replaced with:

<? if (is_home() && (!$paged || $paged == 1) || is_search() || is_single() || is_page()): ?>
<?php the_excerpt() ?><? endif; ?>

Sometimes you can get something like this:

<?php the_content(‘Read More’); ?>

or

<?php the_content(‘More »’); ?>

All you need to do in this kind of situations is to change the code to:

<?php the_excerpt() ?>

If you do not provide an explicit excerpt to a post (in the post editor’s optional excerpt field – in advanced options, under the text console), it will display a teaser which refers to the first 55 words of the post’s content. Let it by default.

Override the index.php file from the server cu modified one, test the website and drink happy a bear.:)
Done!
