Cannot connect Samsung Rant (M540) to the computer
Yesterday I bought a new mobile phone – Samsung Rant (M540). After I went home I couldn’t connect the phone to the pc. Was like my windows XP couldn’t find the driver. It took some minutes to get the solution, you don’t need any driver at all!!

After plugging in the phone, it will pop up “found new hardware”.
CANCEL IT OUT. Eventually check “don’t ask again” and it will never bother you with this question again.
1) Press OK (the middle button on the phone)
2) Scroll down and highlight Tools and then hit OK
3)Scroll down to Mass Storage hit OK
4) Highlight Connect to PC hit OK.
5) Go to Windows Explorer (I prefer Total Commander) and you will see the phone like any other USB device – just drag&drop any files (pictures, mp3s, videos) you want on you phone memory card.
That’s it :)
Be aware, during the phone connection to the PC all calls are disabled.
Updates: Read the full review of Samsung Rant, I has been written after 3 weeks of using it. Or if you wondering How to Setup the Keypad Lock for Samsung Rant (M540) take a look and fix the problem.

I think the error might be in the OS drivers of your system, try to download some mobile software that supports your computer
There is no need for a driver. Like I said, it’s enough to cancel the “new hardware found” win message and you can connect your phone easily. Thanks for replay :)
Good phone but with some tricky settings. The worst part is that it does not have profiles.
what if i already installed the drivers? can i delete them. i was able to successfuly transfer a music file, but since then i cannot connect to my pc.
Corey I don’t know how did you get drivers for this phone since they didn’t provide any :)
vista did its automatic set up thing about finding updates and software for new devices to make them compatible, which it did the complete opposite.
in this case you can roll back the driver. Anyway is better to don’t install anything. Just follow the steps I wrote in this article. Should be very easy.
Is there a way to add music as your ring tone without having to purchase it from your provider?
Bob, I couldn’t find any functional way to assign ring tones from mp3 files, unfortunately. It seams that we have to buy the ring tones…
Omg you are amazing i have just spent the past like five hours tryin to figure that out. Thank you soo much :)
lol, I read your post then right after that. BLAMO it started working even though I didn’t do anything different.
cheeers!
@marco – the magic is in the air :)
dude your awesomE
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
ya i tryed that but i keeps till me “Memory card not present” and im not going out and buying one
@Nitemareforu there is nothing to do with the memory card. The basic function of the phone memory card is for stoking pictures, mp3′s, etc. The connection between PC and phone should be posible without any memory card inserted into the phone.
my phone still says “memory card not present”… ive clicked it a dozen times and disconnected and reconnected my phone.. any other tips or is this just a lost cause?
Hard to say from here. The memory card is a new one? If not, it was working till now? Another thing, regularly is pretty tricky to insert the card into the phone slot, are you sure that everything is ok over there?
I’m having the same problem it says memory card not inserted any other tips I mean what the good of pics and mp3 player if I can’t get it off the computer….Thanks
Danielle you better go to a phone store and ask them for help. It shouldn’t be, after all, a really big deal to insert that card into the phone ,but, just to make sure that everything goes right, you better ask a professional :)
Thanks for that AWESOME fix….never would have got it!
ok now i feel like an idiot! I put the files on the phone, now where is the MP3 player function located? I have searched everywhere!! PLEASE HELP!!
@Alyssa: press OK / Camera & Video / My Albums / External Memory / Music and press Play
Happy listenning :)
I need to use the rant m540 as a modem where can I get the driver I use snap dial to conect
Capt I can’t help you with this. Google it :)
Ken, I have a question similar to Alyssa’s. I have downloaded music but can’t find it. I don’t have the same functions as what you suggested she use. When I press OK I don’t have a Camera’s and Video to go to next. I have an entertainment selection with Music, TV and Games for choices. My Music selection doesn’t bring anything up. A JAVA screen appears then I go back to the menu. The TV application works fine. What should I do?
JD check where you downloaded the music. It should be on external memory as the internal phone memory is very limited. If you still cannot find it, check the memory space available, if is something over there, that should be your music.
I got the Samsung Slyde the other day and I’m having problems connecting to my PC. When I connected it to my computer, I made the mistake of installing the hardware when the initial screen popped up, and now every time I plug it in, nothing pops up, and nothing shows up on the bottom bar of my screen. When I highlight on my phone “connect to PC”, it says “memory card not present” and I do not have a memory card nor do I think I need one.. please help me out..
Also, for some strange reason, my sister has a MAC and the exact same phone, and she was able to send me music and pictures through bluetooth, which shows that my phone isn’t faulty, but I would like to be able to figure out this problem on my PC.
Thanks!
try to uninstall the samsung software you have been installed by mistake. Give a reset setting to you phone and verify in the setting to have disabled the external memory if you’re not using it.
I was able to insert my MicroSD card into the phone and copy the pics over!! Yay! Did the PC USB connection thru the phone but it won’t let me search that drive.. Like it does’nt recognize it even tho it says “new hardware installed” then says theres a problem.. I am able to use the USB adaptor and put the SD card into it and volia! Can anyone help the other issue why it won’t recognize it?
There’s a program from Samsung called pc studio 3 that I tried. I wanted to transfer my sms to my pc, but it doesn’t work! It doesn’t want to connect….has anybody tried this program?? Maybe it just doesn’t work with the model of my phone (M540) or I need a special driver?
Thank you
does anyone no y my rant wont connect 2 java (music thing) i leave it trying to load for like 2 hours and it wont connect even though i have everything updated
I also have vista and allowed win to download the drivers….how do I remove the drivers?
Ok i search around and win update says I failed to install the update, so you would think everything is all good…..But no I still cant get this to work, even if I follow you instructions….whats up?
@davisjayw rollback the drivers.
I click on connect to pc, and it says “Memory card not present” I have tried many times, what do i do?
THANKS! This totally worked… now I’m not so frustrated with the lame manual the phone comes with.
i tried to upload a video to my computer from my RANT and it wont open on any programs i have. what should i do?
@chris, try a search on google for that video format. Not sure what kind of video it makes since I never try to download and watch these videos on my pc.
To those of you who had problems with connecting your phones and received the message “no memory card present”:
I had the same problem. I ended up buying a microSD card and following the above. Unfortunately, my pictures and vids and such would not transfer over. That’s because every picture/video etc. you take gets saved to your phone’s memory card. In order to transfer them over, insert your microSD card, go to your photo albums, click on a pic/vid and hit options. Then select copy/move. This will either copy or move the picture to your microSD card.
Once you have done this, follow the instructions above and it should say “reading” or something. All of your pics and vids will then be available on your PC.
Thank you SO much for these instructions. I recently got a 4gb memory card for my phone, but the card reader I’ve got couldn’t read it. Now I can use it.. thanks so much!
OMG i totally love you! lol
i was having that issuee and it wass pissing me off :)
Fernanda, hehe, nice to hear that :)
glad it works.
