Samsung Rant, the missing review.
I would name this article, the ugly truth about Samsung Rant if I wouldn’t know that is not entirely true. Actually a pretty like my Rant, except some small (or big?) problems I have found in this first year of using it on a daily basis.

So, what’s wrong with Samsung Rant?

First of all, the quality of battery is worst than any phone I have been using in the last years, especially when is coming to listen mp3s. This is draining almost instantly the battery and is one of the thing that are really pissing me off.

The menu is such a shame. They were setup the menu to open on Internet Browser. If the phone is somehow getting unlocked in your poket the phone will go wild on the internet without you even knowing this. I discovered this happened in one day when I was riding my bike and guess what? The phone was opened by itself internet pages for a couple of hours. You don’t even guess how much I did payed for this stupid thing.

When Rant is gonna die, is really dying. When is coming to being discharged, the battery is running out of energy so fast! Be prepared when you’re on a single line of battery energy to plug it for recharging. I remember my old Nokia phone which was staying almost one full day on one line battery level. And was a really really old (and big! – do you remember Nokia 5110?).

Oh, I almost forgot about an important thing, the vibrations. Samsung Rant doesn’t give you the chance to setup both, the ringer and the vibration, you can pick up only one of these two. This is a kind of annoying thinking that sometimes we want to have both activate, the vibrations and the ring tone.

The contact list. Every time you go to see or modify one of the contacts, after finishing is not returning you the that contact in the list but at the beginning of the list. This being said, you modify a contact and you save it. When you go back you are at the beginning of the list. Just imagine if you want to modify a couple of contacts, you are starting modifying it in alphabet order and your contact list has 1,000 entries. This was getting me for a few times.

I will be back with new writings about Samsung Rant as I’m discovering something interesting to write. Meanwhile, peace! :P

I am writing this article as an update to an old post in which one I offered some help in removing “just-in time debugging” pop-up message. It seems that the old method doesn’t help to much, despite the fact that for me was working just perfect.

1. The registry method:
Open up the registry window by clicking on START and writing in run command: regedit (in translation reg(istry) edit). Hit OK.
Now go to:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Script\Settings\JITDebug
Make it 0.

This is doing practically the same thing as the method I have been presented into the old post but since for some of you is not working, maybe there was a glitch and hopefully this new one will do the job.

2. DrWatson method:

START / Run / type cmd and hit OK / type drwtsn32 -i and hit enter.

3. Disable Virtual Studio JIT Debugger:

Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services and disable Visual Studio JIT Debugger, if exist. If not, take a ride through system services that are pointing to one of the following software:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vsjitdebugger.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7Debug\vs7jit.exe

Disable anything you get related to these services. Or better, look after that executable into your computer files and rename them.

As an ultimate advice, download and install CCleaner and search and remove every registry entries from old deleted and uninstalled programs which can possible screw up your computer and make it generate errors and pop-up messages like this one.

Another advice is to remove IE developer’s toolbar. I’d been using it in the past, too. Now I open Firefox and there is that golden tool for developers, named Firebug so I almost forget IE and it’s bull-crap.
Good luck with removing of Just in time debugging pop-up and let me know if any of these methods help.

I did a small form for a payment gateway and needed onsubmit method, so I wrote one and test it. Tests failed in FF but worked in IE, no errors, nothing, only one thing: onsubmit method was skipped by JS Engine in FF.

My original code:

<form action="some_link" onsubmit="some_method()">
</form>

Error? Yeah, a return in front of some_method!

<form action="some_link" onsubmit="return some_method()">
</form>

It’s an old trick, but some people(like me) still forget it :).
Why is return needed? Sends the return value to the browser, if it’s FALSE, nothing happens, if TRUE a submit is coming.

A few minutes ago I opened Photoshop for working a little, but instead of having the tool I needed I’ve got stucked on hand tool. I am using CS3 and this is actually the second time (if I remember exactly) when I have been getting stucked on hand tool. No matter which of Photoshop tools I had been choosing, I’d got only the hand tool.

No Horizontal Type Tool, no Rectangular Marque Tool not even Move Tool. Whatever tool I tried to use it has only let me use the hand tool. It shows that the wanted tool is highlighted, but when over the window the icon shows as the hand tool and behaves as the hand tool, too.

The solution to get rid of this problem is very simple: close and open up again Photoshop, go to Edit, Preferences and click on Reset all Warnings Dialog (CTRL+K in Windows to get straight to the Preferences window).
It should work now :)

I have been googling it to see what the people are saying, but the people are starting to going crazy in all that kind of bull crap suppositions… may be the RAM, the hard drive have a hard time (bad sectors, etc) , the spacebar is sticking on keyboard and some of them even recommended to reinstall Photoshop or even crazy to run the antivirus.

I have been looking for a while for a way to get my old blog articles promoted on twitter automatically using a wordpress plugin. The first days of the new year, 2010, came with an answer: Tweet Old Post. This wordpress plugin is automatically posting your blog articles on twitter, choosing random from within your blog posts, an amazing way to publicize your work onto the most visited social networking website on the globe, Twitter.

I remember, last year I have been trying using Twit Robot, an online service, doing actually the same thing like Tweet Old Post plugin, tweeting automatically old blog posts but for whatsoever reason that services is no longer available or maybe is just temporarily out of service (Server under Upgradation is the message on their website).

I’m not gonna describe Tweet Old Post plugin, as you can get all the details on the wordpress download page of the plugin. I just hope is doing a good job.

I don’t have too many followers on twitter right now (I’ve just created a brand new Twitter account after a few months I was missing from Twitter – after both my Twitter accounts were suspended) but if you get a great number of Twitter followers, this wp plugin will really increase your blog visitors number by tweeting of older blog posts.

Here the wordpress page where you can find this plugin.

Wish you all a very very happy and really prosperous life in 2010 and beyond.
May your hair, your teeth, your face-lift, your abs and your stocks not fall; and may your blood pressure, your triglycerides, your cholesterol, your white blood count and your mortgage interest not rise.

May you get a clean bill of health from your dentist, your cardiologist, your gastro-enterologist, your urologist, your proctologist, your podiatrist, your psychiatrist and your plumber.

May what you see in the mirror delight you, and what others see in you delight them. May someone love you enough to forgive your faults, be blind to your blemishes, and tell the world about your virtues.

May New Year’s Eve find you seated around the table, together with your beloved family and cherished friends. May you find the food better, the environment quieter, the cost much cheaper, and the pleasure much more fulfilling than anything else you might ordinarily do that night.

May the telemarketers wait to make their sales calls until you finish dinner, may the commercials on TV not be louder than the program you have been watching, and may your check book and your budget balance – and include generous amounts for charity.

May you remember to say “I love you” at least once a day to your spouse, your child, your parent, your siblings; but not to your secretary, your nurse, your masseuse, your hairdresser or your tennis instructor.

Cheers..

First of all that blue border is coming from the color of your links, so it can be any color. To remove that border from the images which have a link you’ll have to add to your style one of the following four lines, each one doing practically the same thing.

Is not necessarily to style img a. It’s OK to style only the img and will apply that style to all images from that page/website, no matter if that pictures are carrying a link or not. If you want to apply the style only on a preferred page you will have to add the style into the header of that page only.

Add one of the following line to your css file and it will remove that annoying blue border image link:

img {border: none}
img {border: 0px}
img {border: 0}
img {border: solid 0}

While some of these methods will work, other will not. I recommend using of: img {border: none}, which works well in all known web browsers. Many html-shrinker programs (programs which strip out superfluous white space and unneeded markup, to reduce the size of the page) reduce 0px, 0em, 0pt, etc) to just “0″ and the page-size is reduced by a few bits on every instance.

All of these methods are valid markup but, except the one I’ve just recommended, don’t expect to give the same results in all browsers.
As a final advice try to specify style, width and color explicitly. Not all browsers are that smart we want it to be and you understand perfectly about which one(s) I’m talking about.

There are a couple of methods to uninstall Yahoo! Toolbar, depending which version is, what internet browser are you using, etc.

The most easy method of removing Yahoo! Toolbar is to click on that pencil from the toolbar and select the Uninstall menu command.

The second way is addressing to Firefox users only. Click Add-ons or Extensions in the Tools menu, scroll down to the Yahoo! Toolbar, click on it and click uninstall.

Third method for removing Yahoo! Toolbar is to go into Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Yahoo! Toolbar from there.

Last method. If you have problems removing Yahoo! Toolbar you can try to remove the toolbar by using a run command. Go to Start menu and select Run. Type firefox.exe -ProfileManager and press the OK button. Select your profile and delete it. Create a New Profile by clicking that button and follow the screen instructions to create the new profile. Now you can try again to uninstall Yahoo! Toolbar, following the steps above.

Regularly Yahoo Toolbar is auto installed on the internet browser once with Yahoo messenger installation. But, out there are other installation programs trying to install these annoying toolbars, as well. So, be careful what are you installing next time and take your time reading carefully what the installation’s windows says.

You can either add a link in index / home page or any other individual Wordpress blog page using a short code, you have to place directly in the page template like in the example bellow.

In this example, I have been adding a link only to the first page / index page of the website. In my case, the home page is using a template which is used as well by another pages pointed out from next and previous button. It was useless to add the link, as it is, as a HTML chunk, into the template code because that link will appear (due the fact that other pages are using the same template) on other pages of my website, too.

< ?php if ( $paged < 2 ) { ?>Check my latest work, <a href="http://www.hostingous.com">Top Best Web Hosting</a>< ?php } ?>

paged < 2 means the first page which is using this template – my case, the home page
e.g. if you want to add a link on the second page which is using index template,too, you will use:

$paged = 2

In the same manner you can make the entire page looks different, not only adding a single link but adding different content, tags, divs, different colors and graphic elements, etc

Practically is not anymore a matter of template used. With this method you can manipulate entire pages in seconds.

These days I found Page Speed plugin and since I’m a site-speed freak I said to give it a try.
On my tests I used FF with page speed, firebug plugins.
Page Speed plugin has a tab that shows you what steps needs to be done to speed up your page. I won’t explain again each step of their analysis.
After few hours of research on cookieless domain step found the solution, but you must have full access to your DNS records and some Unix administration background (VPS or dedicated server).

Let’s consider maindomain.com your domain with cookies and your seconddomain.com the one without them.

1. Create A record for maindomain.com called images (images we want loaded without cookie)

2. Create CNAME record on seconddomain.com called images and point it to images.maindomain.com (domain on right box ends with . )

3. Check results with host / dig command.

$> host images.seconddomain.com
images.seconddomain.com is an alias for images.maindomain.com.
images.maindomain.com has address YOUR_IP

The final step is to create a VirtualHost in your apache configuration for images.maindomain.com and give it a DocumentRoot.

<virtualhost YOUR_IP:80>
ServerName images.maindomain.com
ServerAlias www.images.maindomain.com
DocumentRoot /home/maindomain/public_html/images
ServerAdmin webmaster@images.maindomain.com
UseCanonicalName On
..... (I removed some of the lines)
</virtualhost>

Even with VH done images.seconddomain.com still doesnt work. You have to add another alias to the images.maindomain.com like below:

<virtualhost YOUR_IP:80>
ServerName images.maindomain.com
ServerAlias www.images.maindomain.com images.seconddomain.com
DocumentRoot /home/maindomain/public_html/images
ServerAdmin webmaster@images.maindomain.com
UseCanonicalName On
..... (I removed some of the lines)
</virtualhost>

Don’t forget to restart Apache (service httpd restart or from WHM – services)

And you are done!

To check if you have or not cookie on both test subdomains do the following part.

1. Open firebug(NET Tab – click on link there to see header content) or any other plugin which can read headers.
2. Open / reload an image from main domain: images.maindomain.com/image1.jpg – you should see a cookie content
3. Now open / reload same image from other domain: images.seconddomain.com/images1.jpg – no cookie.

Any comments/notes are appreciated ;)

I’ve just received my new watch, a Casio PAG-80 Pathfinder (Santa Claus gave it to me, personally :P ), which is a Pathfinder, Altimeter, Barometer, Digital Compass, solar powered digital watch. Is still missing one single feature, is not an Atomic/Waveceptor watch, feature hardly wanted but unfortunately unaffordable at this moment.

So, what’s the deal? The deal is that I’ve got a very powerful watch. Besides of the time measurement precision, specific Casio watches (I’ve been using Casio watches for many years – the first one bought back in 1994 from my first student scholarship), this watch is offering other interesting measurements, using triple sensors for temperatures, atmospheric pressure (barometer capabilities) and last but not least a pretty nice compass. And, another thing, is a BIG watch. If you have a tiny wrist, like I have, think twice before buying it. No problem if you’re at least as crazy, as I am, after watches.

I am sure, everyone who’s wearing a similar watch has no problem in interpreting the readings except, maybe, the barometer pressure values. This is because there is no lead of how to interpret this readings into the Casio manual received in the box, nor in the pdf manual that I found on the internet.

So, how to interpret the barometer readings for a Casio watch? First of all I think that this way of interpretation of barometer readings is the same for every watch or barometer, so, don’t worry if you are using a different tool for atmospheric pressure measurements, a different watch or even a normal barometer.

Both units you can set the Casio barometer readings are standards used in North America, inHg and hPa. The question is how to read these barometric values? Searching within dozens of websites I have got finally I clear idea what the barometric readings mean in terms of weather condition.

First, set your Casio watch on inHg units and make a reading. The following values will help you to understand clear what can you expect from the weather based on you watch barometer readings.

I’ll be back with a more detailed Casio PAG-80 Pathfinder review.

Congratulations! This is the last page.
Thank you for visiting the End of the Internet. There are no more links.
Go read a book, for pete’s sake. ”

Dear friends, this is the END!
I’ve just reach the last page of the Internet. The end of the end, the Internet is down here on his knees. I see it, I feel it! Now is time for books, movies (not XXX, you dirty bastard!) good music and family candies. Actually I even start with a big cup of ice cream. Don’t judge me, nobody got there before, on the last page of the Internet, like I did.
Peace brother!

Is the hypertext links color, meant to be blue? Well, yes. Google made an experiment with two type of links color, blue and green, or more precisely using colors between blue and green and guess what? It seams that blue links are more clickable, people are more often click on blue links than green ones (hmm, still wondering why techcrunch is using green links).

But why blue? Why not red links, orange or black? This is a hell of question, since nobody can stand with a strong answer. But let’s list together a few theories about blue “Google” link color, why is this that impressive, what are the possible motivations for people to click on blue links:

1. We’ve got used with blue links from the beginning of the internet, the blue links being used as a universal link color. Nowadays is still the default link color for all the existent web browsers.

2. Blue stands out. I’m not so sure about that. I’m thinking that red is a more powerful color that blue, more dynamic and it should (I think it actually do) do a great job in sales. But let’s just admit that between blue and green, blue stands out.

3. moreover, some designers are even thinking that hypertext links should be either blue or purple (which is actually the color of craigslist links!). Both Gerry McGovern and Jakob Nielsen have a strong belief that should be no links other than blue and purple (the last one for visited links) if somebody really wants users clicking on that links. They think that changing the links color from “default” is confusing the users.

My opinion? Oh, well, stick with the default blue color. Why? Simple, it sales, is clickable and why not? At the end of the day, is a nice color. Just don’t forget to add an underline for your website links.

To do this go to your ftp account, open .htaccess (use notepad) and add a similar line. I have been used an example for uploading an .ipa file but you can change to whatsoever type of file you want. Enjoy!

AddType application/octet-stream .ipa

e.g.:
<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
AddType application/octet-stream .ipa
</ifmodule>

Copy this code into a webpage, replace the phrase with yours and you will have at every page refresh a new phrase. The sentences will rotate random, in no specific order.

< ?
$phrase = 'What does pride in your work have to do with stopping support for IE6. A browser that debuted EIGHT years ago. This is ridiculous. Any developer that continues to create hack or workarounds for this abysmal browser should lose their job.';

$sentences = explode("." , $phrase);
shuffle ($sentences);

foreach ($sentences as $element) {
    echo $element . ". ";
    }
?>

Don’t forget, after you paste the code to replace the line numbers. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any way to remove it.

Let’s say, you are in a common situation when you have to search and replace some links in hundred or even thousand of web pages. You are using Dreamweaver. In CodA (Mac) there is a simple command, to use wild cards, at an one click distance, but in Dreamweaver? Oh, well, since you can’t get any help even from Dreamweaver help I bet you’re thirsty to know.

Situation:
You want to search and replace all the links of your website from this:

<a href="http://www.kensfi.com/history_of_coding.html"></a>
<a href="http://www.kensfi.com/tutorials_for_begginers.html></a>
<a href="http://www.kensfi.com/learning_html_in_15min.html></a>
<a href="http://www.kensfi.com/how_to_be_a_dirty_developer.html></a>
<a href="http://www.kensfi.com/CSS_tags.html></a>

to this:

<a href="#"></a>

If you don’t know yet “#” is placing a false link into the page, just to have an idea how the links are displayed on the page. You will have mouse over and all other properties like a regular link except that you won’t navigate anywhere clicking on it.

How to solve:

Search for:

<a href="[^"]*"></a>

Replace with:

<a href="#"></a>

Don’t forget to check Use regular expression (it’s under the replace box).

As you can guess already, this will replace all of your links with the desired code, in this case:

<a href="#"></a>

If you want to search and replace on more than one web page you’ll have to set this in Find in drop box, but I’m assuming you already know this.
