How to burn files larger than 2GB using Nero
To burn a data DVD with a file that is 2 GB in size or larger you must use the DVD (UDF) format and not the default DVD (ISO) which is regularly used for creating a data DVD in Nero Burning ROM.
You will receive a message telling you that you have to use a different specification setting : “The file “” is larger than 2GB and therefore cannot be store in an ISO file system. Please use the UDF file system to write such large files. This can be done by selecting another compilation type.”. And this is because the ISO 9660 specification doesn’t allow to write files that are larger than 2 GB.

To burn more than 2 GB at once you have to use “DVD-ROM (UDF)”. The following steps will help you to do this:
1. click and lunch Nero StartSmart (Nero icon)
2. on the left side of the window you will click on Nero Burning ROM
3. again look at the left of the new window, scroll down and click on DVD-ROM (UDF) – in the image, at the bottom.

4. click on NEW
From here you’ll have to follow the regularly steps in burning you DVD.
As you can see, that annoying message disappear and you can drag & drop files into burning section, larger than 2GB.

Am using Nero 10 Platinum, same message, but what if I want to burn a 10.9 Gb MKV or 6 Gb MPG as a 4.7 DVD-Video?
Please help? This is really getting my goose.
PS: And put subtitles on it too…?
@Crazer
there’s a tiny piece of software (freeware) called HJSplit, download it and it will help you to split and join files bigger than 4.7GB and therefore it would be easier to burn such files on multiple DVDs. Also, you can set the size of the splitted parts. All you have to do after burning is to copy the content of DVDs in the same folder and tell HJSplit to join it in one file.
HJSplit works as a swiss watch and for years never let me down.
p.s. HJSplit works with .iso files so you have to make your big file an ISO file before splitting. use DaemonToolsLite for it (its also free)
I did all the steps but the annoyng message still didn’t dissapear :( Please help
Jean, is not much to be said other than that. It should work. Or maybe you have a different version of Nero?
I have nero 8. I want to make an iso to save on hard disk and burn to a dvd9 (8 gb). I have this issue with nero. In Magic iso i dont know how to switch to dvd.
Hmm, not so familiar with other versions unfortunately. I’m still using the ancient Nero 6.
hi, i have some questions
1. is there a udf file compatibility issue involved?
2. how do i know which udf file format i should download for better compatibility with my operating system and the dvd burning software?
info: i have os-windows xp sp2 and nero start smart
i am really confused, because what i am seeing is that all and every udf file system isnt compatible with windows xp .
please help
Thanks a lot. That resolved my problem :) You are superb.
So what about bootable discs? I need to create a bootable but the UDF doesn’t seem to have that option – how on earth do you create a bootable Windows 7 disc?
Thank you! This was perfect!
THANKS A LOT DEAR….
@Elizabeth
if you want to make a bootable disc of windows 7.
you install IMGBURN (free software).
it easily make bootable windows7 dvd
nero always say “intall.wim is larger than 2 gb”.
you need to download tutorial of making a bootable dvd of windows 7 using imgburn.simple!!!!!!
(i tried it personely)
I burned a 4gb avi file in the UDF mode, however it will not play on my DVD player :(. Any help?
Thanz man :)
So i take it there is no way to burn a bootable disk using nero then? Using udf/iso is not an option because it cannot create boot disk. IMGBURN does work but it craps out and does not want to read certain DVD’s like LG for example. Any other thoughts?
But, will this disc work as a bootable disc? If not, the purpose is not served.
how to make bootable Windows 7 in UDF format? need help..
I never wanted to create a bootable CD/DVD but there are for sure programms specialy created to do that. Why Nero?
Thx men
Cooool Dude
Nero 9 doesn’t supports this features.
I found this feature in Nero 8
Thanks mate, this solved my problem! Appreciated!
