Although is a while since Google announces that is giving more weight to the page load speed, in the last days it was made clear – Google now counts site speed as one of its around 200 ranking factors.

Still the site speed doesn’t seems to be one of the most important factor since Google approximate that only around 1% of the websites will be affected because of it. It has been demonstrated that speeding up the user experience results in more usage, so why not give a little boost to your website?

Questionable for me is why Google is so late in doing this? From my experience I am dropping right away a web page navigation which it takes more than 1-2 seconds to load. Of course if is about photography or graphic design the things are little bit changed, one way or another I have to be patient.

Not so many articles on Kenfi about Google and search engine optimization but since I just started a small SEO company here in Toronto, from now you’ll hear even more about all this SEO stuff :)

Actually is very simple to turn off the Google buzz – go to the bottom of your gmail account page and click on “turn off buzz”. This is a temporary solution (in other words is more than nothing) till Google will give us a solution to block certain users from following us on Gmail Buzz.

There is another (incomplete) way, to block a part of your followers by clicking on the person’s name and choosing Block, but for some followers is not working because they don’t have a public profile.

Anyway there is a lot of “buzz” around about Google privacy infringements related to this feature. On the other hand you can choose your “buzz” to be private which is kinda talking to yourself though.

These days I found Page Speed plugin and since I’m a site-speed freak I said to give it a try.
On my tests I used FF with page speed, firebug plugins.
Page Speed plugin has a tab that shows you what steps needs to be done to speed up your page. I won’t explain again each step of their analysis.
After few hours of research on cookieless domain step found the solution, but you must have full access to your DNS records and some Unix administration background (VPS or dedicated server).

Let’s consider maindomain.com your domain with cookies and your seconddomain.com the one without them.

1. Create A record for maindomain.com called images (images we want loaded without cookie)

2. Create CNAME record on seconddomain.com called images and point it to images.maindomain.com (domain on right box ends with . )

3. Check results with host / dig command.

$> host images.seconddomain.com
images.seconddomain.com is an alias for images.maindomain.com.
images.maindomain.com has address YOUR_IP

The final step is to create a VirtualHost in your apache configuration for images.maindomain.com and give it a DocumentRoot.

<virtualhost YOUR_IP:80>
ServerName images.maindomain.com
ServerAlias www.images.maindomain.com
DocumentRoot /home/maindomain/public_html/images
ServerAdmin webmaster@images.maindomain.com
UseCanonicalName On
..... (I removed some of the lines)
</virtualhost>

Even with VH done images.seconddomain.com still doesnt work. You have to add another alias to the images.maindomain.com like below:

<virtualhost YOUR_IP:80>
ServerName images.maindomain.com
ServerAlias www.images.maindomain.com images.seconddomain.com
DocumentRoot /home/maindomain/public_html/images
ServerAdmin webmaster@images.maindomain.com
UseCanonicalName On
..... (I removed some of the lines)
</virtualhost>

Don’t forget to restart Apache (service httpd restart or from WHM – services)

And you are done!

To check if you have or not cookie on both test subdomains do the following part.

1. Open firebug(NET Tab – click on link there to see header content) or any other plugin which can read headers.
2. Open / reload an image from main domain: images.maindomain.com/image1.jpg – you should see a cookie content
3. Now open / reload same image from other domain: images.seconddomain.com/images1.jpg – no cookie.

Any comments/notes are appreciated ;)

Finally I’ve got the solution, which is solution is actually a easy one: go to Google Toolbar search box and click on the arrow. At the very bottom click on the Clear History link. Easy eh?

Smart enough, in this way you don’t have to delete and lose your browse history.

Here is the solution:
Open your browser and type (for easiness just click on the link bellow):
www.google.com/ncr
press ENTER

close and reopen the web browser and point again to google.com
yep, you’re there :)

http://www.google.com/intl/en/ is doing the same thing.

In the same idea if you want to use something else than google.com, let’s say google india, you have to type this:
www.google.in/ncr

the result will be:

http://www.google.co.in/

You can do the same with www.google.us/ncr, www.google.ro/ncr, etc

Have you ever wondered if is possible to receive notifications from your Google Calendar directly on your cell phone? The good news for all of us is yes, is possible.

For all of us who are using Gmail, we know that there is a nice feature called Calendar, where we can write down our schedule, plan our work for the next days, write down the friends birthdays for better remembering, etc. The best part of this Google feature is that besides the computer pop-up messages we can receive as notification, we can setup to be informed about personal events directly on our cell phone by SMS (it doesn’t require to have an internet connection on the phone!) and for most of us it will be for FREE, except the fact when our phone provider is charging us for receiving messages on our mobile.

How to receive SMS notifications from Google Calendar events?

First of all, in order to use this service, you’ll need to register your cell phone number in Google Calendar. Just sign in, click Settings on the top-right of the page, and go to the Mobile Setup tab. After you have been finished with the registration part you can follow the next steps:

1. open up your Gmail account
2. go to Calendar (on the left-middle) and click on the date you want to schedule a notification (e.g. Dentist appointment)
3. right bellow the calendar, click on Add than click on Edit Details
4. in the New Event windows fill in all the details you want, deselect All Day (it won’t send you a SMS notification if you haven’t deselect All day!)
5. click on Options (right bellow of Description field) and set up the types of notifications you want. See the next print screen for more info.
6. click in Save changes
7. close the windows.

Now everything is up and running. At the desired hour and day you should receive a notification via SMS with that event.

Did you hear about a new song but you didn’t have play it yet? Wanna listen some old music but you can’t find any CD to buy it? For this and for many other reasons some peoples (including me) prefer to Google it.

There exists some advanced operators that instruct Google where in the pages or site, or even in which site, it should look to execute the query.

We will use:
“intitle:index of” mp3

Write it into the Google search box, click on Search button and here we are; a lot of results are coming up, all of them MP3 related :)
Now, if you want a specific song / singer / album use something like this:

“intitle:index of” avril lavigne mp3

So, where are this songs from? This MP3s are from multiple sources: music websites, ringtones websites, online files hosting, blogs, etc.
Don’t expect every website you reach to be entire functional or to play all the songs listed on. Don’t expect everything to be for free, either.

PS. If you figure it out how to make playlist with these MP3s, please let me know ;)

It’s obvious that you can get so far on the internet from a school, a public library, an internet cafe or other public computer. I presume you don’t know yet how to browse for example on facebook.com or other similar websites to keep in touch with your friends during the school hours.

First solution is pretty simple: proxy servers.
Backfox.com is giving a free and easy solution. Go to the website and write down the domain addresses you want to go. If you try to see your IP now, you will find out that you got a new IP :) To check this write down google.com and after “my IP”. Click on the first result and your IP will appear with a bold font.

Another good and free proxy websites:
Anonymouse.org
Stupidcensorship.com
Shadowsurf.com
Hotsurflive.com
Hidemyass.com
Proxyforall.com
Easysecurity4u.com

If your school is getting as good to block access even to this proxy websites the second solution to acces the desired (blocked actually) website is this:
-type cmd into the run command (Start – run)
-type ping facebook.com
-copy the IP (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)
-paste that IP into your internet browser and GO
-you should be now in facebook home page.

If the public computer you’re using is still don’t return your website page, in this second case – the IP is blocked. What you can try is this:
-type into the internet browser: google.com.mx (Google Mexico)
-type facebook.com
-the results will be in spanish
-click on facebook results link on the right on “translate”
-go into the address bar (will be something like this: translate.google.com/translate?h=es) and modify “es” with “en”. Click ENTER.
-right now you should be on facebook.

Google modernized its geo-location API to get more information than mobile phones and work with browsers on Wi-Fi-equipped laptops. On the face of it, the inform means that any Gears-equipped mobile user with a computer or phone can now be positioned to within 200 meters, allowing web sites to goal location-specific content straight to them at will. However in terms of online marketing, the ramifications are a bit more exciting.

The API lets developers generate locally relevant versions of their web sites with no requiring from the users to go write their location. The right localized edition just gets dished out without human intervention. That is, as long as users decide to opt-in. Google realizes location-awareness can be kind of weird and has made it so that the equipment won’t kick in unless a user specially requests it–at least twice–once from Google and once from the online advertiser.

Google says its unique intent at the back of the Geolocation API was to make it easier for developers to transport location-enabled web sites on cell phones. But now it sees the perception of adding laptops into the mix, so it’s added Wi-Fi signals to the API. The API works just with Gears-enabled browsers, such as Chrome and Android (and possible with Firefox 3.1).
